Compassionate and effective editing services
You’ve done it. You’ve written your book! It’s a huge accomplishment that many dream of but relatively few achieve. If you’re not sure what to do next, I’m here to help!
Writing a book is no small feat, and getting it ready for publication can feel like a mammoth task. If you want the support of a friend and the expertise of an editor, you came to the right place!
As a writer myself, I understand how close you are to your project and how hard you’ve worked. My goal is to help you fulfill the vision you have for your book. When I’m your editor, I’ll be there to encourage you and give you the feedback your book deserves.
Services
Developmental Edit
This type of edit involves the big picture: structure, pacing, flow, consistency, character development, voice, and more. I’ll suggest edits and leave comments on your document, as well as provide an editorial letter that gives you an in-depth explanation of my feedback.
Line Edit
For a line edit, my focus will be on the readability and quality of your prose: word choice, clarity, flow, impact, and more. I’ll suggest edits and leave comments right on your document.
Proofread
The proofread is the final step in the editing process! By now, your manuscript is almost ready, so during this last review I’ll comb through and make sure there are no typographical errors or format inconsistencies. My goal is to give you the peace of mind that your book is truly complete and polished!
Editorial Assessment
Not sure what your manuscript needs or what to do first? I’ll go through your entire manuscript and give you an editorial letter that outlines big picture suggestions and feedback that will help form your revision strategy.
Copyedit
The copyedit is an important step in polishing your manuscript. I’ll thoroughly examine all things technical: punctuation, grammar, spelling, and adherence to the Chicago Manual of Style. Again, I’ll suggest edits and leave comments on the document for your review.
Lauren Palmer, author of The France Dance
My career as a writer has spanned eleven years, and through that time, I’ve come to understand how significant having a quality editor on your team is to the work produced. In a somewhat dramatic sense, I would equate this to a surgeon having his favorite professor available in the operating room to guide him through each complicated step of a surgery. I was lucky to have Ashlyn “scrub in” for my debut novel, The France Dance.
For this novel, Ashlyn and I completed two rounds of developmental editing and one round of copy editing. Her edits were easy to understand, smart, didn’t compete or take away from my authentic voice, had quick turn-around times, and came from someone who obviously understood the genre and audience. Ashlyn was not scared to freely speak her thoughts while also working easily with changes I chose not to make. High quality editors have a high understanding of the English language, communication skills both on paper and with the client, are versed in writing trends, and are well-read themselves. Ashlyn has all these qualities and more. I know The France Dance is the best version of itself due to Ashlyn’s knowledge and insight, and for which, I will always be grateful!
